Evacomics on local Chinese newspaper Zaobao

Image
I was on Singapore local Chinese newspaper "联合早报"(Zaobao) today!!! :) The news article is a copyrighted material, so I will just talk about the article briefly. To read more, please buy a hardcopy or subscribe to Zaobao at  http://www.zaobao.com.sg  ;) xxx Translated brief: Evangeline Neo, a local Singaporean illustrator had recently gained popularity on the internet with Evacomics series that talks about the cultural differences between Singapore, Japan and US. Her comics are updated every Monday and her Facebook had gained 19,600 likes since its establishment in 2010. She was aspired to become a cartoonist since young and was inspired by Japanese anime and manga. She even spent a year preparing a short story comic to enter into a comic competition held by Kodansha, Japan. Although she was selected for the initial round, she did not win the award in the end. ( Blog post back then here ). She started drawing webcomics in Chinese on wretch.cc (a Taiwanese blog

Happy 2014!

Image
2013 had been an eventful year for me. First I graduated from Waseda Business School in Tokyo, then I was selected for a fully sponsored trip to CoFesta Japan. On 25th Dec, I finally got to move to an empty room so I could setup my own home studio. I must thank all my loyal fans who had supported me throughout these years when I was just drawing unpopular short comic strips about my daily life till I changed them to comparisons between Japan and Singapore (and sometimes US) in April 2012. Thank you all for your awesome support by liking and sharing my comics, and especially fans who had bought my merchandise online and specially came down to visit me at Marina Barrage, Singapore. After 3.5 years of fun, study, close shave with death from earthquakes and radiation worries in Japan, it is finally time to pay back in Singapore XD My wish for 2014 is to publish my first book and to develop Evacomics brand. And of course, to gain more wonderful fans like you. Wishing everyone a f

Singapore Mooncakes

Image
In 5 days time, we will be celebrating our Mid Autumn Festival, a much celebrated festival by the Chinese. It is the 8th month 15th day on the lunar calendar when the moon is at its roundest form. Thousands of years had passed, but our lunar calendar never fails to nail down the date for the roundest moon. On this day, families come together, much like Chinese New Year, to eat mooncakes and admire the bright moon. It is also a custom to give mooncakes between relatives or business associates to wish them have a happy reunion with their families. Mooncakes are traditionally baked with lotus paste filling and sometimes with yolk. These are usually favored by the older generation. However for younger people like me, snowskin mooncakes are appealing too, such as the ones shown above.

Shopping Strategy at Borders Clearance Sale

Image
Just returned from the Borders Sale at Expo with 50% discount off all books. The original price tag was way too expensive, no wonder they're going out of business in Singapore. In fact, you might find some paperback version cheaper in Amazon than the 50% discounted hardcover versions found there. I arrived at 11am and spent 1.5 hours browsing and selecting my books. By the time I join the queue, it was already incredibly long and I had to drag my basket of books for 2.5 hours before reaching a cashier. When I was done, it was already 3pm, too tired and famished to "cheong" (battle) the John Little Sale at Hall 3. Here are some shopping strategies to share when you go to a "clearance" sale: Just grab the things that you're interested in, if you're having a hard decision, just grab and go. By the time you're done scavenging, the queue would have been really long. So if you're going with a friend or family member, a good strategy is to have

Image
My university from Japan is holding a short intensive course in Singapore so we had a gathering dinner on National Day at Al Dente, Esplanade. As you can see, the location was really close to the parade!

New comic title for download!

Image
I finally finished translating 31 pages of my diary comics drawn last year and serialized on my Taiwanese blog. I kind of liked this series a lot but because all of my old Chinese titles are from right to left, I have problems exporting them to eBook platforms. From now on, my comics will be standardized from left to right to make them more exportable worldwide. Click here to read now!

No new comics because...

Added Manga Downloads page

Image
For the first time, I'm putting up my short story manga entry that I'd sumbitted into the 4th Morning International Comic Competiton (MICC) back in December 2009. It was the first time that my comic had made it into the initial round of an international contest. It is 34 pages long so it takes a bit of time to read. If you prefer the PDF version, you can download that in the respective links. After drawing 110 pages of 4 short story comics, I must say, drawing them wasn't difficult, it was writing the stories that give me the headaches. Shichiya's Pawnshop had went through so many revisions that in the end of the day, I find that drawing short 4 panel comics was much more enjoyable. Download the manga at my Manga Downloads page!

Ganbare Higashi Nippon!!!

Image
My Japanese scholarship association decided to include the theme of "Ganbare Higashi Nippon!" into our quarterly newsletter to motivate fellow Japanese to overcome this series of disasters. Instead of writing messages, I chose to drew up this poster in hope that it will "ganbare" (cheer up) the people in eastern Japan in a more visual way and impact. Although I didn't quite enjoy my stay in Japan, I'm still very keen to research on Japanese indie comic artists in Tokyo. I pray that Japan will recover soon from her unfortunate earthquakes, tsunami and nuclear disasters, and hope that the people of Japan will be able to stand united and strong to restore their nation to her former glory.

15mins of fame 15

Image
Through some connections from the Japanese University Graduates Association of Singapore, I was linked up for a brief interview on national TV live show Good Morning Singapore. With me was another renowned Singaporean make up artist, who was in Chiba when the quake happened, and a psychologist. The main topic was about dealing with post-crisis psychological management. (Sorry, I don't have a psychological trauma XD)
