Beer and drinking custom in Japan

Yup everyone has to drink beer in Japanese parties, even just a tiny sip. I personally prefer sweet wine and mixed juice+alcohol such as: レモンサワー (Lemon Sour: Shochu with soda and fresh lemon juice)、ゆずサワー (Yuzu Sour: Shochu with soda and fresh citrus) and カシスオレンジ (Cassis Orange:  Mixed orange juice with Creme da cassis, which is a sweet dark red liqueur made from blackcurrants). These cocktail mixes are usually served with ice. Many women also like to order 梅酒 (Umeshu/plum wine) and it is served with either ice (ロック rock)or soda water (ソーダ soda) in Japan.

----------

Sake 酒: Often referred to as Rice wine although the fermenting process is closer to beer.

Shochu / Shouchuu 焼酎 : Distilled spirit from barley, sweet potatoes, buckwheat or rice, etc. Typically contains higher percentage of alcohol content. It is also often mixed with soda and fruit juice to become Chuhai 酎ハイ. My favourite is with lemon or grapefruit :P

Cheers :P

These are the 50 worst beers in the world.
None appear to be from Japan. If you think it is difficult convincing Japanese that you do not drink, try it in the Former Soviet Union.

  3. And the irony of it all is that by biology facts japanese are not very well adapt to hold their licor...but the liver is like a muscle...or like my buddy used to say "the more you drink, the more you "bulletproof" your liver" so he drank like a damn camel and I don't know if it was coincidence but he was best person I have met holding the licor

    1. It's true you can be trained to hold it better. And if you stop for a long time, you lose it.
But any excessive drinking is bad for health, maybe they balanced it with green tea :P

  5. I have not smelled a durian but I understand rotten onions or raw sewage is sometimes used to describe it. Might have a problem getting it to the party as it is banned on some public transportation and who wants their car to smell like raw sewage. But I do get your point. I will continue to stay clear of both alcohol and durians. A far as creepos comment about bulletproofing you liver, sadly it does not work that way. Think of alcohol as making bullet holes instead. I have absolutely no problem with other people drinking. It is just that I am happy with my mood just as it is and never feel the need to nor want to alter it.

    1. Myth: Eating durian and drinking beer at the same time may kill you
Quote: "There is no scientific evidence to show that this is a lethal combination. It is more likely to cause bloating, indigestion and discomfort as your liver has to work extra hard to metabolise both fats and sugars in the durians and the alcohol, especially if you have consumed both in excessive amounts."

Yup, it is lethal alright! You are safe!
