Webinar about Social Media Marketing for Artists and Entrepreneurs

Image
I had been procrastinating to do a webinar about how I increased my fanbase from only 600 Facebook likes in 2012 to 68,000 likes now without paying for any FB ads. Luckily my procrastination stopped when Mark Koh from Temploy asked me to do a webinar for his company as a reward for their crowdfunding campaign: Skillup 2015 . Skillup is a free two-days event for youths to be inspired and learn about jobs outside the norm, such as part-time jobs, creative jobs as well as becoming entrepreneurs. I know Mark Koh from one of his networking events and he is also a writer together with my comic artist friend, Shawn Siow, for their new book " Silent War ". If you read my blog last year, you would know that they actually let me share their booth at Comic Fiesta , Kuala Lumpur. My Webinar Ok, I admit, it was my first time making a webinar so it was a bit draggy at times and totalled at around 68mins. I split the webinar into three parts: 1) Introduction, 2) Strategy and Execu

How to unblock your link when Facebook blocks it by saying it is unsafe

Image
The Problem I tried to post a blog article on my FB page EVACOMICS  on 20th Jan, but whenever I post my link, Facebook will insist that it might be UNSAFE and I had to enter a captcha code!

Facebook labelled my blog as unsafe and blocks it

Image
So I wasn't sure if it was because I added a word "AD" at the top that made Facebook all sensitive, but they flagged my entire blog as "UNSAFE" since last week and had not lifted the block although I sent several requests to unblock it. You know I write here often and I visit my own blog almost everyday without any problem. Now I have to key in this troublesome security code each time I post my link and users have to confirm that they want to leave FB to visit my blog. THIS IS NOT COOL. So Facebook, maybe you want me to pay that's why? You can help by reporting to Facebook that my lovely blog that has been around since 2009 is perfectly safe by going here: https://www.facebook.com/help/contact/571927962827151 and fill in http://evacomics.blogspot.com is NOT UNSAFE! Please remove the block. Thank you!!!

Evacomics at Comic Fiesta 2014, Kuala Lumpur Malaysia

Image
I didn't plan to go Comic Fiesta initially because I was uncertain how to bring my books there by myself and nobody to help look after the booth when I am not around. Strangely, one week before CF, I met Shawn (artist) from Draw Slowly  and Mark (writer) from Temploy during Bookmate's launch event and they were going to CF to launch their crowdfunding comic project: " Silent War ". They offered to share their booth with me so yup, off I go!!!

Evacomics at Popular BookFest (12-21 Dec 2014) Suntec Singapore

Image
It was a privilege to be on BookFest stage despite being assigned a weekday evening from 7.30-8.30pm and labelled as a for "Kids"event. I was very worried that there will be no crowd and my fans won't show up so I asked a few of my friends to come support me (and of course buy the book at 20% discount hee hee hee)

Evacomics at AFA 2014

Image
This was my first time at Anime Festival Asia (AFA) so I didn't know if sales would be good or not. I heard that there will be a lot of people but I wasn't sure if they were into well-known anime or into my original creation. I was very lucky that my booth location was pretty good at the entrance into the Creators Hub section.

The Birth of Eva, Kopi and Matcha at Japanese Association Singapore

Image
I usually give talks (20-25 mins or so) as part of a program for festivals or at bookstores. But this was the first time that it was just me, yup, JUST ME alone to sustain a 2 hour session consisting of a 45mins talk, 10 mins demo and 15 mins QA session. The venue is far from shopping malls and their restaurants only serve Japanese Association members. So people who came were really there for my talk only.

Why my books are still not in Malaysia and other countries yet

Image
After releasing my first book in late June, my distributor took 1000 copies from me to be distributed to local AND Malaysian bookstores. However after selling another 500 copies by myself through talks and conventions, they STILL have not gotten ANY of my books to Malaysia yet! WTH!? WHY!?

Evacomics Talk and Book Signing during Makers' Block Festival

Image
After going through much turmoil for the past 7 years figuring out what kind of comics I could draw so that people would follow ( read my frustrated article here  ), I am finally going to have a book!!! Although publishing a book is easy if you have connections and money, I wanted other people (not just friends) to buy and genuinly enjoy them. Talk and Signing on 27th June (Fri) 12:00-14:00 During the 1 hr talk with Q&A, entitled as "The Power of Dreams" (no relation to Honda), I will talk about my childhood obsession of watching cartoons and then inspired to become a comic artist when I was exposed to manga (Japanese comics). I will describe how this dream brought me to study in US and Japan, and the obstacles faced while working towards my dream of being a comic artist and to have my comics widely read around the world. Throughout the presentation, you will see my old comics that didn't work out and what I learned from each failure to move on. I will also talk

My demonstration on a Cintiq 24HD during a Wacom Event at Scape

I met up with an ex-classmate during a business networking session and he coincidentally was working on organising this event so I was invited to go down for a demonstration. It was a bit creepy seeing your own photo...

Evacomics debut on magazine!

Image
My comics can be found in the J+PLUS magazine  now! J+PLUS is a bimonthly free magazine targeted at the Japanese community living in Singapore. The magazine is released on the first and third Thursday every month, and can be found at Japanese supermarkets and various restaurants. Because it is for Japanese, everything is written in Japanese except for my comics. The magazine is mainly ad-supported so there are a lot of articles introducing products and services of various shops in Singapore. Why put my year of birth? Because Japanese always put them so I followed XD

My Bee grade adventure as a full time artist

Image
Well there is always up and down in life so I thought I will just blog about my current down in life: Cash-flow problem. I am pretty sure I will laugh at myself when I become successful and looking back at how crappy I had managed my small business so I am going to document about this experience for future book material and reference for other people in the same situation. And yes, I had to sell my old art materials to generate some income and quit buying things that I don't need, which I suppose it's good (optimistically speaking). The first ridiculous incident. A government school contacted me to ask if they could print my comics into A1 size to decorate their training rooms. The only problem: there will be no payment. Instead, just a credit to my website, claiming that it will help to advertise my work to more people. Sorry, I don't work for free unless it is for a good cause, and supplying you with free designs so you can earn more money from training adult
