Comics: Convenient Stores

Image
I often go to convenient stores to buy bento, snacks, cakes or vegetables when I was in Japan. Sometimes I will pass by their adult magazine section and wonder if I should play prank by browsing through it and see the reaction of customers and staff. But I wasn't brave enough and abandoned the idea...

Comics: Insanely expensive Japanese Fruits

Maybe they grow only one fruit a plant but that insane price makes me wonder if anybody is buying it...

My BPPV experience (Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo)

Image
Some of you were shocked to learn that I have stones in my ears but actually everybody has them. In normal circumstances, they stay inside a chamber with a membrane to keep them from going out. However when a person ages or suffer from a head trauma, these small stones may dislodge and float around in the ear fluid tubes that disturbs the body's balance system (aka vestibular system) and the mind perceives the room as spinning although it isn't, aka vertigo giddiness. The term BPPV means the vertigo is aggravated by certain head positions, comes suddenly and although it seems serious, it is actually not life threatening. However during a vertigo attack, it is very uncomfortable as the whole room seems spinning. BPPV is common among elderly and people with head trauma. So the only thing I recalled doing out of the blue was an aerial yoga session 2 days before and an attempt on tripod headstand the day before. I only felt fatigue on that day and suddenly woke up to a spinning r

Comics: Japanese Stairs

Image
Anyone who has traveled to Japan will know that their train stations require a lot of stair climbing. Escalators and elevators are either far away or non-existent, so be prepared if you are bringing your parents or kids in strollers!

Comics: Trishaw and Rickshaw pullers in Singapore and Japan

You can find trishaw uncles at Chinatown and dashing rickshaw pullers at Kyoto~ Idea contributed by Catherine, one of my yoga teachers!

Drawing Tokyo Tourist map demo

Image
A few of my fans on Patreon requested me to upload screen captures of me working, so I decided to do one of the pages of my second book that I was working on. The second part is a travel guide to Japan and this one showed how I came to design the map (which turned out to be drawing a Totoro fanart...). This is 17min long. The second part shows more finished artwork but the final map is a bit different and you will be able to see it in my second book, releasing later this year. This second part video is 20min long. Enjoy! Comics: Long-term relationship between Client and Artist

Image
Quite a lot of us receive emails from companies who say they were looking to build a "long-term" relationship with the artist as a way to request more discount (sometimes free work too). But we prefer to see the cash first...

Another Naiise retail shop for local artists and designers to showcase and sell our products

Image
If you have been receiving all the posts from my FB and Instagram, you'll know that my book and cat cushions are now selling at all 6 Naiise outlets in Singapore. They opened a brand new flagship store at the Cathay's basement this month and they invited all suppliers to party!

Patreon goal finally reached after more than a year, although for one day only

Image
After relentless whining about the lack of support for artists and my expensive monthly medical fees, a friend decided to pledge and encouraged me to finish my second book earlier. And because it was my birthday month, a fan increased her pledge to $10 for this month only, hence for the first time in more than a year, I finally reached the goal of US$600/month!!! \(≧▽≦)丿♪ \(≧▽≦)丿♪ \(≧▽≦)丿♪  But after one day, a fan lowered his pledge for June... ... anyway, at least all patrons are still around!!! It has not been easy and many times I was disappointed because although I have 96,000 likes on FB  and 5,400 followers on Instagram, I have less than 60 patrons supporting me. Which made me wonder WHY??? Sometimes I post about my disappointment on FB, but I would get random readers telling me to stop posting such demoralising posts, so I only post my comics nowadays... #supportlocal ? When my first book was published in 2014, I had around 48,000 likes but sales was slow. I h

Comics: Kids and Insects

Image
This idea was actually by Kok Hong, one of my FB reader. Quite interesting don't you think? Probably because of our lack of interaction with nature that causes us to freak out whenever when we see insects.

Comics: Pear-shape body woes with clothes

Image
It's a pain when you have a big belly and thick thigh... We can only wear bootcut or flare jeans and the tops had to be loose at the waist and hip area. Can't wear lots of nice yoga clothes and have to experiment with different lengths of tops and patterned leggings.

Comics: Diet plan that fails

Image
This doesn't work... the only way is to completely stop buying (and seeing evil). BTW, if you like my comics, please consider to support me on patreon! I promise no snacks... ...

Comics: Usage of baby prams/strollers

Image
Not all the time, but sometimes!

Comics: The hot weather

Image
It has been incredibly hot lately and I find trains and malls blasting their aircon to the max. Many people around me are feeling uncomfortable or having sore-throat. As for me, I'm still trying to recover fully from my last sinus and throat problem but the extreme alternating temperatures is not helping. I had to gulp lots of water everyday to make sure my sore throat and cough doesn't come back!

Comics: Meaning of Sayonara

Image
Sayonara has a meaning of good bye and a sense of finality to it, so avoid using it with your clients!

Comics: Hiring married women

Image
I had a classmate in US who used to work at an automobile company but quit her job to pursue illustration. She was also divorced. Upon graduation, she told me that she did not want to return to Japan because she would be "too old" to get hired and cannot have a career in the new line. I remember she was only in her early 30s and I did not understand why. I, on the other hand, was keen to go Japan to work one day. Years passed and I eventually gotten my wish to go Japan. Not to work, but to study. I was glad that I was studying so I had time to make new friends and do sight-seeing for a few years. I later know about the working condition and female discrimination that made me stop day dreaming about working there. Despite Abe's urge for companies to employ more women, employers tend not to because they are afraid that the female employee will quit when she has a baby, which sadly happens in most cases. It could be because their parents stay too far and are unable to

Comics: Japanese Office Toilet

Image
I went to a Japanese company for an interview before I decided to leave Japan. When I went to the ladies toilet, I saw a nice wooden locker cabinet mounted on the wall with small compartments. I know Japanese are very particular about hygiene but to see a locker for toothbrushes and sanitary stuff is a whole new world for me...

Comics: Working Early in Vietnam

Image
I was surprised when my talk was supposed to start at 8am at the Law University! Little did I know companies usually start work at 7.30am, which means I would have to wake up at 5.30am... ...

Comics: How to Cross the Street in Vietnam

Image
This is based on readers feedback on my previous comic strip. Just in case any of you are going to visit Vietnam!!! Though I admit wearing spectacles doesn't increase my eye power... (Actually I wanted to do another comparison strip about the roundabout traffic, but there is no characters involved and France has a lot of that too so I scraped it!)

Comics: Crossing the road in Vietnam

Image
Seriously there were no traffic rules in Ho Chi Minh City! Motorbikes can still dash the red light. My friend and I had to hold our hands tight or follow locals to cross the roads. Another friend of mine, who had experience working in China for a few years, was so terrified to cross the road that she had to take a cab to just reach the opposite street! (There will be 2 more comics about Vietnam for my Vietnamese fans, stay tuned!)

Comics: Job rotation

Image
Japanese companies do not let employees specialise in one skill but instead be a Jack of all trades. So even if the employee graduated from an engineering school, they will place him in sales. During promotion, they may even transfer a sales assistant manager to Human Resource!

Comics: Discussing with employees

Image
Although Japanese love to have meetings to gain a common consensus, they also may decide important things among themselves and simply let the employee know their final decision without discussing with them.

Comics: Getting New Namecards in Japan

Image
Based on my friends' real stories. Quite amazing that the CEO has to approve namecards too! No wonder there is a lot of overworking in Japan...

Sightseeing within Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) in Vietnam

Image
Saigon Central Post Office The Saigon Central Post Office is one of the most popular tourist attraction in HCMC. It has a distinct architecture and colour that you will not miss when you pass by.

Mekong Delta day tour from Saigon Tours Vietnam

Image
We signed up a day tour from Saigon Tours Vietnam to visit Mekong Delta to see their floating market. Because it was a few hours drive from HCMC, the guide stopped by a cafeteria for us to drink Vietnamese coffee and coconut water. Vietnamese coffee tastes very strong and acidic, I became awake not because of the caffeine but because of the strong taste  ( ̄▽ ̄;;)

Vietnamese Food in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Image
Wrap and Roll 62 Hai Bà Trưng, Bến Nghé, Hồ Chí Minh, Vietnam Doanh brought us to a restaurant called "Wrap and Roll" to taste Vietnamese food. As you can see, there is a lot of greens in Vietnamese food, which is great for guts and health! No wonder I did not fall sick when I was in Vietnam but once I come back to Singapore I caught a flu again...

Hotel review: Pullman Saigon Centre in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Image
We chose Pullman hotel after reading some good reviews especially about their breakfast buffet. The hotel is located in district 1, which is like the hub of the city and 15min walk to Ben Thanh Market, but crossing Vietnamese traffic can be quite daunting. Key attractions like the cathedral and post office were a bit further but they offer shuttle bus service to these places.

Talk and Donation at HCMC University of Law

Image
It was a privilege to share my experience about the magazine infringement case with students at Ho Chi Minh City University of Law. The panel of speakers included Doanh Nguyen, who is their alumni and legal specialist who helped me in the infringement case.  You can recap what happened here.

Comics: Why Japanese takes forever to decide

Image
This is based on true story from my Japanese friend, that they need meetings to discuss when to hold the next meeting! Consensus from everyone is important but this delays making decisions...

Yoga Comics: The Countdown Cheat 2

Image
Seems that not a lot of people understand the previous strip so I did this version which may be more obvious. Although I find the previous twisted lunge pose more difficult to hold than this warrior 3 pose.

Yoga Comics: The Countdown Cheat

Image
I am experimenting a new format for my yoga comics and writing slightly more on my blog than FB and Instagram. The twisted lunge pose is pretty challenging for me to hold after 5 breaths. The other challenging pose for me to hold is the boat pose. I am still unable to straighten my legs without sitting back, which is incorrect posture for the back. Oh well, one day I will be able to!

Yoga Comics: Baby Crow Pose

Image
Somehow I find baby crow pose more difficult that crow pose! The back of the arms and core has to work really hard to lift the legs up! P.S. I will be dedicating a new tag to my comics about yoga, fitness and diet (failures).

Singapore rubbish bins VS Japanese vending machines

Image
In Japan, a vending machine can appear anywhere, even at deserted places. Likewise in Singapore, you will find rubbish bins, everywhere!

Japanese smartphone camera shutter sound cannot be turned off

Image
People who bought iPhone in Japan will be disappointed that the camera shutter sound cannot be turned off even when the phone is set to silent mode. The reason behind this madness is because Japanese are very sensitive about people taking their photos secretly, so manufacturers are not allowed to let users take photos without shutter sound. Unfortunately, other smartphones also share the same fate but I heard that it can be resolved by downloading certain apps, which of course is a bit of a hassle. Besides that, Japanese phones are also locked to their service provider so you have to jailbreak them to use with another carrier or in another country. That is why many people buy iPhone in Singapore because it is not locked to another carrier and yes, camera shutter is turned off when the phone is in silent mode~
