Recording for Knockout Carnival TV program on OKTO channel
Frankly speaking, I hadn't teach drawing for more than 4 years so when I was contacted to become a mentor for a national TV program, I was pretty darn nervous. The show was called "Knockout Carnival" on OKTO channel that targets kids and teens to let them know more about our local arts scene. The shots were filmed on 25th August at Hoods Inc's studio and the episode was on air on 25th November.
You can watch the show here (I appear somewhere in the middle, but you can't skip the loading):

I was supposed to teach drawing comics within 10mins to 2 groups (red and blue) then determine who did better. (Wow 10 mins!? Madness! But I did it anyway with help from a good friend running manga drawing workshops)
I got to meet Gurmit Singh and Haikel!!! They were awesome professional comedians and celebrity actors who can lighten up any tense moment and save the day!
There was an online segment where we get to be interviewed by the mascot "BooBoo" and you can watch it here: http://xin.msn.com/en-sg/video/watch/knockout-carnival-series-7-webisode-18/vp-8a19d139-4d20-45af-b228-9ffae2b146b8
Of course, I didn't forget to bring my book as presents to give to the cast. Hope they like it!

I managed to catch Gurmit and Haikel before they leave, so happy ( ̄▽ ̄)
They actually did another comic strip for the contest but they couldn't show it on TV because the target audiences were too young. So here it is! Very funny right :P
I had a good time there and wished I could be more prepared next time so I wouldn't stammer so much and remember to look at the camera as I talk. And in case you're wondering why my hairstyle was different is because I went to the salon just before recording to fix my hair, heh heh heh...

ReplyDeleteThe comic of the houses is top notch :)
TV personality, comic artist...wow your carreer is flying like never before...thrilled!
Hmm... could be restriction from xin msn too... I tried to watch a local sitcom from Japan last time and it was blocked too :/
DeleteNow... I need to clear off some clients work <- people are dragging here
Then focus on line stickers at 2nd book!
How great it would be to have a sow that gets people involved in the arts here in the States. Here, we don't put enough emphasis on the importance of creativity in our lives, but in reality, creativity is the basis for meaningful innovation. I'm glad you were able to take part in this and share it with us as well... you were great!
ReplyDeleteRolf, you don't need a show because you all do have creativity and arts already! I studied fine arts in San Francisco and I can tell you how much better you all are in arts education and actual practice! Singapore used to be developing but lost it in recent decade due to fast economic development and emphasising on work that earns money. Naturally, art is not considered profitable here and I am still rejecting low-paid projects especially from the government!
DeleteThat depends on where you're from though. Schools are one thing, work is another. I studied art in Boston, but in my area of New England, economic professions are valued over creative ones. It's hard to find work out here as a graphic designer or illustrator. It's just not as appreciated. I still think it would be nicer if my area, at least put more value in art: holding events, competitions, etc. I'm living it and can tell you that it's just not here. =)
DeleteI see... definitely very good in California where all the conventions happen!
