Chinese New Year in Yokohama
First day of Chinese New Year at Yokohama Chinatown wasn't as crowded as I'd thought. The area was brightly lit with chinois decorations and dotted with restaurants offering buffet.
We spotted our auspicious lion dance troop, attracting visitors as they travel from one restaurant to another.
There were no big head doll nor roaring dragon dance, but there were firecrackers that were set off in metal cages to create the CNY mood.
There were quite a number of confectionery shops and we spotted this huge mooncake!
We finally settled our CNY dinner at a not-so-expensive, non-buffet-style restaurant. We shared 8 dishes for auspiciousness and I ordered this cold dish. It tasted unexpectedly good for a chinese restaurant in Japan :)
I ordered a deluxe bun and dim-sum set, which cost 5200yen, in a supposedly famous "bao" store and had it delivered frozen to my place FOC. I tried it yesterday morning and they were not bad!
I find the fillings not as much as Singapore buns but nevertheless still quite tasty, much better than those supermarket buns. The pork bun was pretty good, with thick oyster sauce aroma but a bit on the salty side. To my amazement, the buns that I'd bought were called "hukahire" buns, which means sharks fin bun. I think it was totally unnecessary and feel sorry for those poor sharks that were killed just for their fins. I'll purchase again if there's no sharks fin.
Happy Chinese New Year everyone! :)
