Perception of Comics in US, Japan and Singapore

Perception of Comics in US, Japan and Singapore cultural difference webcomics manga
When I tell people I draw comics in Singapore, they often think it is for kids and say they want to buy my book for their kid or friend's kids. My speaking slot at a local book festival was also assigned to a day where they focus on authors and artists who write and draw children's books so parents can bring their kids on that day and see which books to buy. Although of course, I don't mind kids reading my book, I hate it when people classify comics as for kids only. I hope with my comic strips about different cultures and yoga, adults will also fall in love with reading comics and understand that comics are not just for kids and teenagers only, it's for everyone.

  1. I have the feeling that in Germany it's similar to Singapore.
    Manga are still seen as something for kids. There are adults who read like Donald Duck comics and stuff, but that's about it. ^^;

  2. Marvel/DC is for nerds. I've never seen Archie here. Snoopy/Garfield/... is mostly for children, but adults read it too. Asterix, Spirou&Fantasio and other franco-belgian comics are read by adults but it's rather "childish pleasure". Book stores and publisher try to establish Graphic Novels as comics for adults.

  3. It is right, I'm a French living in Germany and there is the same huge gap between France - 2nd country for manga in the world after Japan ^_^ - and Germany, where the manga and other comic is always denigrate by most of adult.
    I miss my French bookshop. T_T

    1. Ah! I heard about the Japan Expo in France too! It's a major convention outside of Japan. Hope to participate some day!

  4. For those adults from countries who perceive comics as for kids only, they would be in quite the surprise should they discover their kids reading the classic works of Junji Ito, R. Crumb, Heavy Metal, Tales from the Crypt, The Sandman, and countless others.
