Odd Japanese English: Freeter

Image
It seems that the concept of getting a job in Japan is getting a full-time job from 9-5pm. Freelancers and unemployed are two different things and throwing a "Freeter" word to cover both is rather inappropriate IMO.

Cyclists in Singapore are really rude

Image
I lived in Seng Kang for 2 years and there are many cyclists there. They love to ring their bells all the way and expect us pedestrians to move to one-side when they dash by impatiently. They even ride their bicycles indoor inside the community hub area and I even scolded a boy not to ride his bike inside the building as he was ringing his bell non-stop while on his way to buy snack at a stall. There are many cyclists in Japan as well but they seldom ring their bell. The sidewalks are wider and the cyclists are patient enough to slow down or overtake instead of ringing their bells frustratedly like in Singapore.

Population Control US, Japan and Singapore

Image
US has a lot of land and welcome immigrants (to a certain extent of course). Japan wants to welcome foreigners but difficult to accommodate foreigners. Singapore welcomes foreigners despite not enough land...

Break Time during Life Drawing Sessions

Image
I was surprised when I attended a life drawing session here and all the artists flipped their pages as soon as a break was announced as if they are fearful of people seeing what they drew... Perhaps Japanese do not like to show off their work and prefer to keep things to themselves...

Odd Japanese English: High Touch

Image
High Touch in Japanese actually means high five! I guess they don't like to assert too much force when happy?

Eating in the street of Japan is considered rude

Image
There is an exception if you are visiting a festival or fair in Japan where there are many street food stalls. However, people still tend to gather at one place to eat finish their food first before moving on :P~ (BTW, I originally planned to post a comic about the recent incident, but because I received a good reply, I decided not to go ahead but post on my Patreon account only instead).

Take away or to go in Japan

Image
I heard that no take away of leftovers from restaurants and buffet was allowed because of a major food poisoning that happened some years ago. Caterers and restaurants did not want to be liable if anything happens. Bento are ok because they have a expiry date and storage instructions on the packaging! Maybe this explains the tiny portions too...hmm...

Odd Japanese English: Rentogen and X-ray

Image
This thing didn't happen, but I did visit a doctor with my mask frequently when I was suspected of contracting TB... ( you can find my blog post here back in 2011 )

Animals taking over human jobs in Japan

Image
In Japan, cats can become station master and dogs can become store keepers! Don't think this can happen in other countries... *sweat* http://edition.cnn.com/2015/08/24/travel/new-cat-stationmaster/ http://www.boredpanda.com/dog-opens-window-shiba-inu-doge/ *I will be signing my comic strips from now on to prevent theft of my artwork with my credits removed.

Deadly Indonesian chili VS Japanese curry

Image
Last comic strip based on my trip to Indonesia last month! The chili is deadly!!! (Singapore is in between I think)

Tight security in Indonesian shopping malls

Image
I was really amazed with the tight security at shopping malls in Indonesia. They even check vehicles when you drive into the driveway or carpark. I felt almost as safe as airports... I wonder if it happens in other countries too?

Queuing for a cab in Japan and Indonesia

Image
Happened to me while I was waiting for a cab at my hotel in Jakarta. Would have chased that well-dressed office lady if not for my luggage...

Censorship of nudity in Singapore and Indonesia VS Japan

Image
Actually I was wondering if I should remove the nipples in the first panel for fear that Facebook or Instagram might terminate my account. But if I removed it, the comic will not accurately portray the absence of censorship and freedom of artistic expression in Japan. So in order to preserve my message, I decided to upload this comic to my blog and my  Patreon  page only. How publisher censored nudity in Indonesia If you read my post earlier about my visit to Elex Media, my publisher in Indonesia , you would know that I was impressed with their "censorship" department. These guys actually replicate elements from the original drawings to cover up the sensitive areas: such as falling leaves, cans on the floor (to censor magazine covers next to the cans), or speech balloons. As you know, there is A LOT of nudity in Japanese manga, so there is actually quite an amount of work to do. How publisher censored nudity in Singapore Maybe because our market here is very sma

How we complain

Singaporean VS Japanese!

Smoking on the streets

Image
Just came back from Indonesia and realised that it's actually much worse than Singapore... But other than the smoke and jam, I love Indonesia a lot! Indonesians are so helpful and friendly! Love the food and price too! Hope to go Indonesia again!!!

Odd Japanese English: Demo

Image
So if you say "demo" to a Japanese, he/she will think of the protest...

Japanese way of asking for payment

Image
Do you prefer your bill to face up or down while eating?

Way of eating noodles in Japan

How to eat Sushi

Image
I tried to eat the proper way but the ingredient (neta) always fall off! Also it's very common in Singapore that we mix our wasabi with soysauce and then dip the sushi inside.... I think that is not the "proper Japanese way" to eat it, but it's so normal here nobody cares!

Japanese charms omamori from temples and shrines

Image
This comic was a special request from my friend who recently discovered that all her charms that she bought in Japan "doesn't work" anymore.  Of course, I was the one who broke the "secret"... Japanese shrines and temples practice this way in order to get continuous funding to maintain their facilities. On the other hand, Chinese temples gather funds by accepting freewill donation (also called incense money) from devotees and visitors praying for good luck, health or wealth. The charms bought from Chinese temples will also last a life time, as long as you maintain a good heart and do good deeds. Extra money from collection will also be donated to related charities annually to continue benefitting the community. On a side note, priests and monks are also very different in Japan, it is more like a job there. They go to work at the temple/shrine during the day, and go back home to their families (yes, they can marry!) at night. Some even go drinking or visit
