The quest for Singapore Chicken Rice in Tokyo

Singapore Chicken Rice in Tokyo
Photos of Singapore food flooded my Facebook wall last week because my school held a study trip to Singapore. So thanks to my friends, I developed a craving for our famous chicken rice so I decided to gather a few friends, who had studied in Singapore before, for a chicken rice lunch at Harajuku. But alas, we didn't know that even restaurants could close for the Obon Festival (around 15th Aug)!!! Japanese will go back to their hometown during Obon, something like hungry ghost festival of Singapore, where we go to our ancestor's grave to clean it up. Strange that all Japanese knows this but it's not on the calendar at all! (My university campus is closed for 1 week so I had to go somewhere unless I want to stay at home to meditate for a week).

So we decided to go to this Sin Tong Kee restaurant at Ebisu. A friend would be late (not sure how late), so the lady boss chased us out because she insisted that the restaurant would be very crowded during lunch time (although there were some empty seats). My Japanese friend became so pissed that she went straight out and said "ok, bye bye," and the lady boss coldly responded with an "ok, bye bye" too. This terrible service is really uniquely Singapore and so I sincerely believe that their food is very authentic.

We went to another chicken rice restaurant in Ebisu that provided fantastic service. Strange that there's instructions on how to eat our chicken rice. Perhaps Japanese are more used to chopsticks or fork+knife  combination instead of a fork and spoon.

The decoration is very SE.Asian with ceiling fans.

As mentioned, service is totally unlike the previous restaurant. The waitresses were very attentive in refilling our condiments like garlic or chilli sauce and was fast to top up my friend's rice (which was free).

When we left, they were closed. Luckily we came early!!! The taste was alright, but I definitely still prefer my chicken rice back home :P

PS. Yes, we may visit the restaurant with the horrible service because of its authenticity XD

  1. ummm ... chicken!!!!

So, chopsticks wasn't an option here. I beleive that country without chopsticks has no future.

BTW, food looks very plain, don't think that I'd enjoy it, even if I am hungry right now ...

Is that a lemonade in a glass? How was it?

    ewww ...

  3. Tried Xindongji many years back when I was staying there. Had a nice chat with the lady boss then who gave us discount after learning we are Singaporeans. Explained to us why chicken rice will never taste as good in Tokyo, mainly because there's no place to buy live chicken in Tokyo, so all chicken meat are frozen. Don't know whether it's the same after all these years!

    1. No wat, the meat is fresh, not frozen.
Just that you cannot find live chickens on trucks, they're already processed at the farms.

  4. Sit down and meditate is not that bad...ok wait, yes it is...I had to do just that all morning because the server, internet, phone...everything was dead and there was nothing else to do beside...well, meditate. Man I hate not only how boring that is but all the damn depresive and sad sh** that comes to mind, like "Hey, whatever happened to the excersise routine I said I was going to do..." and so on...that reminds me why it is so important to be busy all the time.

    1. HAha don't think but DO!?

But hey, don't you have a book to read than meditation XD
Or sleep... that's nice too XD

    2. I don't know why but bosses prefer to see you "seem" to be busy by meditating or contemplating a stack of papers rather than watching you sleep...the tyrants

    3. Actually I did it once by spreading lots of papers on my table and pretending to be really busy.

I think my lady boss found out in the end that I was just pretending XD
